Rear Admiral Upul Ekanayake joined the Sri Lanka Navy on 07th January 1985 as an Officer Cadet of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Branch in the 13th Officer Cadet Intake, after attending Royal Collage, Colombo.

He underwent officer cadet training at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee before being sent to Naval College of Engineering at INS Shivaji, India, which is affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi where he received a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in December 1991, after which he served as the electrical engineer of offshore patrol vessel SLNS Abeetha as his first appointment.

During an impressive career spanning three decades, Rear Admiral Upul Ekanayake has held many key appointment including Command Electrical Officer (Utilities), Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee (2002-2006); Captain Electrical Department (North), Northern Naval Command (2006-2007); Deputy Director Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Administration and Utility) at Naval Headquarters (2007-2010); Commodore Superintendant of Dockyard at Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee (2010-2012) and Director Naval Electrical & Electronics Engineering (System) at Naval Headquarters (2012-2017). On 04th May 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and was subsequently appointed as Director General Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

His service decorations and medals include the Utthama Seva Padakkama, Armed Service Long Service Medal & Clasp, Sri Lanka Navy 50th Anniversary Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, East Humanitarian Operation Medal, North Humanitarian Operation Medal & Clasp, North and East Operational medal & Clasp, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal & Clasp and Commendation Badge.

To his credit, he has attended a number of local and foreign courses of academic and professional value, including the Electrical and Electronic Specialisation Course at INS Valsura in India and various other continuous professional development courses in Netherland, Singapore and Sweden. Rear Admiral Upul Ekanayake is a member of the Institution of Engineers, India and an Associate member of the Institution of Engineers in Sri Lanka.

Rear Admiral Upul Ekanayake is happily married to Geetha, He is blessed with two Sons, Pramod and Janiru.
