KKVPH De Silva

Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva was born on 14th July 1964 in Galle and completed his school education at Dharmashoka College, Ambalangoda. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy on 11th January 1984 and followed his basic training at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee.

He is specialized in Ship Salvage & Diving and Explosive Ordinance Disposal Diving. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration for Human Resource Management. He has also earned a Master’s degree in Military Science &National Security Strategy Studies from National Defence University, China.

Rear Admiral De Silva has commanded numerous ships of the Sri Lanka Navy including the Flag Ship SLNS Sayura. He has commanded the Special Boat Squadron, the elite force of the Navy and Diving and Salvage Unit for Number of years. Furthermore, he has held the Director Personnel and Training appointments at Naval Headquarters, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet and Area Commander appointments of Eastern, Southern and the Northwestern areas.

He has been awarded a number of gallantry medals including “Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya” the second highest award twice for the act of bravery he displayed in the face of the enemy. He is an all-round sportsman who has been adjudged the Best Sportsman of the Navy twice and awarded navy colours in 29 occasions for multiple spots talents. He was a member of the national basketball team and taken part in SAF games and Asian Basketball Championships.

At present Rear Admiral De Silva holds the appointment of the Director General Operations. In addition, he is the Head of the steering committee of Marine & Eco friendly projects and the Chairman of Water skiing & power boating of the SLN.

Rear Admiral De Silva is married and is the father of two sons Yehan and Dulina.
