        Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle RSP, USP, ndu, psc, MSc (D&SS) is presently performing duties as the Commander Western Naval Area. He joined Sri Lanka Navy as an officer cadet in 1985 and undergone his basic training at Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee and International Sub lieutenant Course in Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England. Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle is an Anti Submarine Warfare Specialist and trained at INS Venduruthy, Kochi in India. Further, he has followed Sub Lieutenant Technical course and Naval Staff Course in India, International Senior Officers Amphibious Planning Course in USA and an Alumni of National Defence University- Beijing, China.

During his long career in the Navy, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle had served onboard various ships and establishments. He had commanded good number of ships / squadrons including Fast Gun Boats ( SLNS Ranawickrama, Prathapa) , Fast Passenger Ferry- Jetliner (A 545), Coastal Patrol Craft and Fast Attack Craft. He was the Defense attaché for India during the period 2008 to 2010 and held many important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters as Director Naval Personnel, Director Naval Operations and Director Naval Foreign Cooperation and Director Naval Projects and Planning. Deviating from the traditional naval duties for a year, he did manage the pioneer naval hospitality venture ‘Jetliner Nautical Enterprise’ also. Apart from that, he held the posting as Deputy Area Commander of Eastern Naval Area in year 2014 and is a recipient of the Rana Sura Padakkama for gallantry.
