Born on 18th September, 1965 and educated at Royal College in Colombo. He excelled in both studies and sports throughout in his school career. He was a Prefect and a prominent active character whilst at school.

He joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet of the 13th Intake at the Naval & Maritime Academy on 07th January, 1985 and he received his basic training at Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee. On completion of two years successful training period, he was commissioned as an Acting Sub Lieutenant on 05th January 1987. Subsequently he was promoted to the ranks of Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain and Commodore on 7th November 1988, 5th May 1989, 5th May 1995, 5thJune 2002, 01st July 2006 and 01st January 2010 respectively. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 01st June 2015.

He completed his Sub Lieutenant Technical Course and specialization in Gunnery in India. He under went training on Gabriel Mark II Missiles and Fast Missile Boats in Israel, where he was selected to be a member of first gunnery team to handle missiles in Sri Lanka Navy. He has visited USA and Russia during his service as a member of new acquisition teams. He also participated the seminar/workshop on Comprehensive Security Measures to Terrorism organized by Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Honolulu-Hawaii (APCSS) in year 2005. Rear Admiral DNS Ulugetenne is a distinguished graduate of Joint Services Command & Staff College, United Kingdom where he was graduated in ‘psc’ and MA (Defence Studies). He also participated the United States Pacific Command International Intelligence Fellows Program (IIFP) conducted by National Intelligence University - USA in year 2013. Rear Admiral DNS Ulugetenne secured his second Masters Degree from the University of Wollongong, Australia where he was graduated on Maritime Policy. He graduated from National Deffence College, India on 25th November 2016.

During 32 years of his Naval career he held number of sea and ashore appointments where he performed very successfully. He has commanded Long Patrol Boat, Fast Attack Craft, Landing Craft, Fast Gun and Fast Missile Vessel namely P 245, P 464, P 481 L 820 and SLNS Ranarisi. He has served on board Fast Missile Vessel, SLNS Nandimitra as Weapon Officer and Executive Officer and commanded the same ship in 2009/10. He also commanded 4th Fast Attack Craft Flotilla the most prestigious teeth arm of the Sri Lanka Navy which comprises 57 Fast Attack Craft. He held three appointments as an instructor in Naval and Maritime Academy and General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy and commanded two Naval bases namely SLNS Thammanna and SLNS Rangalla. The other key appointments he has held during his unblemished naval career are the Director Weapon Systems and Director Naval Intelligence, Deputy Area Commander of Northern Naval Area and Director General Services. At present, he is serving as the Commander Southern Naval Area. He participated “Flash Style, Naval exercise with US Navy (Special Boat Squadron) and attended seminars/workshops in Human Resources Management, Conflict Resolutions & Reconciliation and Inter National Ships & Port Security Code in Sri Lanka.

He has been awarded “Rana Shoora Padakkama” twice by the HE the President for his bravery acts in the face of enemy and other decorations bestowed on him include Uththama Sewa Padakkama for his unblemished service, Sri Lanka Armed Service Long service Medal, Sri Lanka Navy 50th Anniversary Medal, 50th Anniversary of Independence Medal, North & East operations Medal, Purna Bhumi Medal, Deshaputra Medal, Wadamarachchi operation Campaign Medal and Riviresa operation Campaign Medal. The “Desha putra” Medal was awarded to him for injuries he sustained when Fast Attack Craft commanded by him blown up by terrorists. He is married to Chandima. They are blessed with a 15 year old daughter, Samadhini.
