Defence Services Athletics Meet: Priyadarshani stars on day one

Chamali Priyadarshani of the Sri Lanka Navy came up with a magnificent performance as she rewrote the Sri Lanka record for the Triple Jump as seven records were shattered, including a Sri Lanka record, on the first day of the Defence Services Athletics Championship at the Sugathadasa Stadium, on Friday.

Defence Services Long Jump record holder Priyadarshani cleared a distance of 13.39 metres in the women’s Triple Jump final to erase a nine-year-old record of 13.00 metres, set by Anusha Ekneligoda in 2002.

The SAG medalist will compete in the Long Jump final today where she is expected to improve on her own previous meet record which was set four years ago.

Meanwhile, C. W. H. M. Kapukotuwa of the Sri Lanka Army established a new meet record in the Shot Putt, when he cleared 14.08 metres, to break the previous record of 13.92 metres, which was set by S. A. P. Silva of the SL Navy in 2001.

The next meet record was set by W. H. S. K. Weerasekara, of the Sri Lanka Air Force when she cleared 39:61 metres in the Discus Throw to better the record set by E. A. M. Edirisinghe of the SL Navy.

R. P. W. L. Dayarathna of the Sri Lanka Navy meanwhile, did well as he went on to clear a distance of 72.98 metres in the Javelin Throw to improve on the record set by K. H. K. Gunathilaka, two years ago.

In the relays, two new meet records were established in the men’s and women’s 4x100 events. The Sri Lanka Navy team clocked 40:48 seconds to set a new record while the women’s team of the SL Air Force finished in a time of 46:61 to improve on the previous record.

Nineteen finals will be worked off today, the second and final day of the championship.
