  Commander of the Navy visits North-central Naval Area

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited the North-central Area on 20th and 21st December 2010. He made an inspection tour in Nachchikudah and made observations of the infrastructure development in the area. He also inspected the Divisions of the North-central Area and addressed the naval personnel of the North-central Naval Command.

  India-Pakistan Naval Chiefs to meet in the presence of the Commander of the Navy

During the Sri Lanka Navy’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, Indian Navy Commander Admiral Nirmal Verma and Pakistan Navy Commander Admiral Noman Bashir had the opportunity to meet each other and exchange pleasantries. The happy union took place in the presence of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe who played host to the two neighbouring nations.

  Commander of the Navy receives Secretary Defence at the International Sail Past

The Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe received Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the International Sail Past  held on 11 December 2010. The International Sail Past was held in the waters of the Indian Ocean off Galle Face greens at 04.30 in the evening. Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonathilaka and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya were also present at the occasion.

  Commander of the Navy accompanies HE the President at Presidential Fleet Review

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe accompanied His Excellency the President during the Presidential Fleet Review on (1 December 2010. The Fleet Review was held inside the Port of Colombo in the morning.

Eight International ships joined SLNS Sayura to accord their salute to his Excellency the President.

  Commander of the Navy receives Naval Chiefs at Naval Conclave

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe received the participating Naval delegates for the Naval Conclave at Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee on 10th December 2010.

The Naval chiefs of Australia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Maldives and United Arab Emirates and the other heads of delegations took part in the deliberations. Matters of mutual interest in the Naval and Maritime field were discussed during the session.

  Commander of the Navy welcomes world Naval Chiefs at the Naval and Maritime Symposium

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe welcomed the visiting Naval Chiefs and representatives for the Naval and Maritime Symposium on Sustainable Support for Security and Safety at Sea, today (08 December 2010) at the Naval Headquarters.

The Hon. Minister of External Affairs Professor GL Peiris graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff and Air Force Chief, Commander of the Army and Inspector General of Police were also present.

Delegates from 21 countries including 06 Naval Chiefs from around the world participated at this symposium.

  Commander of the Navy visits India

At the invitation of Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of the Indian Navy, Admiral Nirmal Verma, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, made an eight-day official visit to India commencing from 19th October 2010. Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe ceremonially launched the official web site of the Sri Lanka Navy’s 60th Anniversary on 29th October 2010. A team consist of 28 school cadets and 5 officers from SARRC countries participated in an interaction session with the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe at the Ward Room, Naval Headquarters, on 18th October 2010.

In his short interaction with the cadets, the Commander of the Navy advised them to improve their skills for the prospects in future carriers. Director Naval Training in a short presentation briefed the cadets the functioning of the Sri Lanka Navy. Director Naval Personnel, Deputy Director Naval Personnel and the senior officers of NHQ attended the occasion. Mementos were exchanged as a gesture of goodwill after the refreshments.

  Parents thank Navy Commander for Saving the Life of their Daughter

The parents accompanying little Poojani Ameshika called on the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo on 15th October 2010 to express their gratitude for saving the life of their 15-month-old daughter. Poojani, the only daughter of engineering mechanic A Hettiarachchi attached to SLNS Pandukabaya in Poonewa, successfully underwent a liver transplant surgery at Global Hospital in Chennai, India. Poojani’s expenses, which amounted to 6.4 million rupees, were met by the generous contributions of the Naval personnel belonging to all Naval Commands under the ready consent of the Commander of the Navy. Local Agent, Global Hospital in Chennai, Mr. MFA Riyas (Chairman, Forte International (Pvt) Ltd) who coordinated and facilitated the surgery, was also present on the occasion and the Commander of the Navy thanked him for his generous support.

  Commander of the Navy conducts Annual Inspection in the Southern Naval Area

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe conducted the annual inspection in the Southern Naval Area on 27th, 28th and 29th August 2010. Commander of the Navy attends “Galle Dialogue 2010”

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe attended the inaugural maritime conference “Galle Dialogue 2010” held in the port city of Galle. He made the welcome address at the inaugural session on 06th August 2010, receiving the local and foreign scholars and experts in naval and maritime affairs who shared their views at the two day dialogue held under the theme “Charting the Course for Sustainable Maritime Security Cooperation”. Making the concluding remarks at the final session held on 07th, the Navy Commander elaborated the vision of the Secretary Defence calling “all onboard to collaborate for secure seas” and commended the gathering of brilliant maritime minds under one roof.

Commander of the Navy visits Naval Deployments in the South Eastern coast

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited the Naval Deployments at Yala and Arugambay on 30th July 2010. Commander Southern Naval Area Commodore PADR Perera, Senior officers from Naval Headquarters and Southern Naval Command too participated in the visit.

During the visit, the Commander of the Navy inspected the administrative and operational readiness of the Naval establishments. The Navy Commander on his way back to Galle visited the Ranminitanna Tele Cinema Village situated next to Navy’s Agricultural Project, Kirindioya Farm.

The operational condition of the slipway at SLNS Dakshina was also examined by the Commander of the Navy.

  Commander of the Navy visits Korean Naval Ship "Wang Geon" at the Port of Colombo

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited Republic of Korean Naval Ship "Wang Geon " at the Port of Colombo on 23rd July 2010. He was warmly received by the Commanding Officer of ROKS "Wang Geon " Captain Suk- Jong upon his arrival on board the Ship. Ambassador of Republic of Korea in Sri Lanka His Excellency Chai Ki-Chul and senior officers of the Sri Lanka Navy were also present at the occasion.

Commander of the Navy and the Commanding Officer of ROKS " Wang Geon " exchanged the mementos to mark the occasion.

Navy Commander Address 2nd Indian Ocean Naval Symposium In Uae

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe delivered a speech on the theme of “Promotion of common strategies and procedures” at the second Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) held on the theme of “Together for the Reinforcement of Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean” The speech was widely appreciated and the proposal for counter piracy and for operational level interaction between the Navies received wide acknowledgement. 21 Chiefs of Navies of 35 literal states of the Indian Ocean participated in the symposium held in Abudhabi during the period 10th to 12th May 2010.

Commander of the Navy addresses Parents of Navy Cadets

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe addressed the parents of the Navy cadets of 50th Intake at NHQ Wardroom on 15th July 2010. He warmly welcomed the newly-enlisted 65 cadets and thanked the parents for giving consent to their sons to devote their precious youth for a noble cause.

 

Commander of the Navy visits Wanni

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe took part in the visit made by Secretary of Defence Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to Wanni on 13th July 2010. The delegation included Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya. They visited the Security Forces Headquarters Wanni (SFHQ-W) and attended the religious rites conducted at Madhu Shrine. They also visited the 61 Division Headquarters at Vellankulam.

 

Navy Commander visits Eastern Naval Area

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited the Eastern Naval Area on 12th July 2010. On his arrival, he was received by Commander Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage. He visited Nayaru and Poduwakattu Naval Deployments and inspected the constructions of the Oluvil Harbour. He made an inspection of all Naval vessels and craft under the Eastern Naval Command and addressed the officers and sailors of the Eastern Naval Area. He also inspected the operational readiness of two Fast Attack craft by conducting sea trials on them.

  Wesak  religious  activities  at  Naval  Headquarters

In commemoration of three most significant events of the life of Lord Budda,the Birth, the Enlightenment and the attainment of Parinibbana on Wesak full moon Poya Day, religious activities were conducted under the patronage of Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe  at  Naval Headquarters on 25th May 2010.

Chief of Staff and President of the Buddhist Association of Sri Lanka Navy Rear Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake, Senior officers and the other officers of the Western Naval Area and family members of the Naval personnel participated in these religious observances.

The venerable Thero who preached was offered with a Atapirikara by Commander of the Navy and all the war heroes who sacrificed their lives for motherland  were remembered by invoking with religious blessings.

  Secretary  Defence ceremonially commissions slipway at SLNS Uttara,Port of Kankasanthurai

During his visit into the Northern Peninsula on 29th April 2010, the Secretary Defence Mr.Gotabhya Rajapaksa along with Chief of Defence Staff, the Commander of the Army, Inspector General of Police and other VIPs arrived to the Northern Naval Command Headquarters at Kankasanthurai. He was received by the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe  and the Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Susith Weerasekara.

Later on, the Defence Secretary had the honour of ceremonially opening of the 60 tons slipway which had been designed and constructed by the veteran engineers and the divers of the Sri Lanka Navy.

In the evening, the  Secretary of Defence with other VIPs  worshiped the historical Nagadeepa Viharaya and met the chief incumbent and the devotees. He observed the Navy’s involvement in providing the pilgrims with welfare facilities.

The Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe briefed the President on the Navy exhibition stalls which depict the role and mission of the Sri Lanka Navy and its future plans promulgated in accordance with National policies.

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited “HMAS Glenelg” at the Port of Colombo on 29 January 2010. He was warmly received by Commanding Officer of “HMAS Glenelg” Lieutenant Commander ST Doolin, upon his arrival on board the ship. Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Her Excellency Kathy Klugman was also present at the occasion. The Navy Commander presented a memento to the Commanding Officer as a gesture of goodwill. “HMAS Glenelg” is a patrol boat belonging to the Royal Australian Navy and arrived in Sri Lanka on the 28th January 2010 on a goodwill visit.

Commander of the Navy attended the Nautical Enterprise Launching Ceremony yesterday (22 January 2010).The Sri Lanka Navy’s largest passenger craft “Jetliner’ was launched as a Entertainment Cruise Venture yesterday at the Port of Colombo. Honourable Minister of Tourism Achala Jagoda, the Chief Guest was received by Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe upon his arrival.The Chinese Ambassador, Secretaries to the ministry of tourism and ministry of ports and aviation, and foreign dignitaries were among the list VIP invitees. Many senior Naval Officers and a large number of other invitees including members of the media were also present.

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe attended the “Atavishi Buddha Pooja” ceremony held at Tissa Viharaya in Trincomalee on 21st January 2010. Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited the “Deyata Kirula” exhibition site at Pallekele in Kandy on 18 January 2010.   Commander of the Navy visits Northern and Eastern Naval Bases and speaks to Fishing Communities.

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe visited the Naval Deployments in Kayts, Nainathivu, Kankasanthurei in the Northern Naval Area and Thavulpadu, Pulmudai and North of Trincomalee on 10th and 11th January 2010 respectively. He addressed the Naval personnel in Northern Naval Deployments and the officers and sailors of the Naval Fleet and the Naval personnel attached to the Trincomalee Naval base. During his visits, the Navy Commander also met with fishing communities in Kayts, Pulmudai, Kokilai, Erakkandi, Salpearu, and Kuchchaveli and addressed them at Kayts, Pulmudai and Nilaveli.

  Commander of the Navy visits coastal areas of Colombo

Commander of the Navy visited the coastal areas of Colombo to look into the fishing activities and also the welfare of the fishing community on 08th January 2010. He inspected the Modera fisheries harbour,  the new Dickowita fisheries harbour  which is still under construction and the Kelani river mouth area. He also visited SLNS Kelani at Uswetakeiyawa to look into the administration, security and welfare matters.

  Commander of the Navy addresses LIMA conference in Malaysia and visits South Korea

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe was invited to speak at the prestigious biannual Langkawi International Maritime Conference and Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia. His speech titled “Current Maritime Challenges- A Sri Lankan Perspective” was well received by the distinguished gathering. On his return Commander of the Navy visited South Korea where he was welcomed by the Chief of Republic of Korea Navy Admiral Jung Ok-Keun and was accorded a Guard of Honour. The Navy Commander visited the second fleet of the South Korea Navy at Gaeryong Port.

  Commander of the Navy attends welfare ceremony of KIA and MIA personnel

Commander of the Navy was present at the handing over ceremony of 25% salary to the parents of Tri forces personnel killed or missing in action (KIA/MIA) whose widows and wives have remarried before 21st November 2007.The ceremony was held at Panagoda  Army Camp on 6th January 2010.Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was present as the Chief Guest. This welfare scheme is an initiative taken by the Secretary Defence.  Acting Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke was also present at the occasion.

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe wished all the Naval and civilian personnel and their family members a happy new year filled with peace, happiness and prosperity. He met all Directors General and Directors of the Navy in his office in the morning and later attended a function held in view of the dawn of the New Year 2010 at SLNS Parakrama on 01st January 2010. He commended all for their diligence and devotion to duty and thanked them for contributing to make the Navy’s mission a success.
