The LTTE lost their biggest attack craft named “Indumathi” off Point Pedro on the 19th June 2007. The craft, which was badly damaged and left behind by the fleeing LTTE cadres under the fierce fire attack of the SLN units, was towed to the KKS Harbour by the naval personnel on the 20th June around 0900 hrs upon successful completion of their operation against the LTTE sea tigers.

Sri Lanka Navy’s Fast Attack Craft (FACs) confronted a cluster of twenty-four (24) LTTE boats along with four (04) suicide craft off the Point Pedro coast on the evening of the 19th June around 1630 hrs. During the confrontation, the FACs destroyed five (05) and damaged (09) LTTE craft inflicting heavy damages to the enemy. Unable to withstand the fierce SLN attack, the sea tigers fled towards Kadaikadu. The fleeing LTTE cadres were in total disarray since they did not receive the reinforcement they requested from their command. Their biggest attack craft, “Indumathi”, which was badly damaged in the confrontation, was left behind by the fleeing sea tiger cadres.

The LTTE craft, which was 16.5 m long, was fitted with four (04) Out Board Motors (OBMs) with a capacity of 250 horse power in each. A 14.5mm twin barrel anti-aircraft gun was fixed at the front with four (04) GPM guns mounted on the sides to bolster its fire power. The craft also had a radar and a GPS inside. Four (04) communication sets (02 hand-held and 02 base station com sets) were also found abandoned by the terrorists. There were four bodies of LTTE cadres trapped inside the craft. The bodies were later retrieved by the naval personnel and the arrangements were made to hand them over to the LTTE through the ICRC.

This craft had been observed by the SLN units being used constantly by the LTTE cadres in their attacks against the Navy.

Around forty (40) LTTE cadres are suspected to have been killed and a large number are also believed to have sustained serious injuries in the confrontation. No naval craft or personnel were damaged or injured in the incident.
