Rear Admiral G.R.M. De Mel, OBE - Royal Ceylon Navy

08.15.1955 to 15.11.1960

Born in 1917 and commissioned as probationary Sub Lieutenant in the Ceylon Naval Volunteer Force / Ceylon Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 7th Feb 1940. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1941, Lieutenant Commander in  1945. Served on all Ceylon Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (CRNVR) ships. After general demobilization, he was retained in the "Nucleus" as Commanding Officer, CRNVR. From 1946 to 1950 in the rank of Commander, when he proceeded abroad for training as senior most Ceylonese officer in the Royal Ceylon Navy after Navy Act was passed. Appointed as extra A.D.C. to the queen in 1954. He was confirmed in the rank of Captain and promoted to Commodore in 1955 and Rear Admiral in 1959. He retired in 15th August 1961.
