Commissioning and Passing Out Parade at NMA

A glamorous Commissioning and Passing Out Parade was held at the main parade ground of the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee on 28th May 2012. Seventy six (76) officers including 04 officers of the Direct Entry (RNF) 02nd Intake 2011 Officer Category, 35 officers of  the Direct Entry (VNF) 03rd Intake 2011 Officer Category and 37 midshipmen of the 26th Intake of the Kotalawala Defence University passed out under the flood lights.

The Chief Guest, the Minister of the External Affairs, Hon. Professor GL Peiris took the salute after inspecting the Commissioning and Passing Out Parade. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake, the senior naval officers, parents and well-wishers were also present on the splendid occasion.

The NMA strives to achieve international standards and holds the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification awarded by the Sri Lanka Standard Institution. In recognition of the yeoman service rendered over the years, the Naval and Maritime Academy was awarded the President’s Colours in 2003. it is considered a rare privilege to undergo and complete one’s naval training from such a distinguished institute. The newly commissioned and passed out officers marched in a majestic manner, attired in ceremonial naval uniforms. The passing out parade was held in keeping with rich customs and traditions of the Sri Lanka Navy. Those who outstandingly completed the comprehensive naval training were presented with awards for their achievements during the training.

The midshipmen of the 26th Intake of the Kotalawala Defence University consist of 13 Executive Branch officers, 12 Supply Branch officers and 12 Engineering Branch officers. Mid WMMFW Jayawardena was adjudged the Best Midshipman. Setting a new record in the history of the Naval and Maritime Academy, Lady Mid SPHD Senadeera clinched both awards for the highest aggregate score in overall subjects and professional subjects. She was the first Lady Midshipman who won the prizes of the highest aggregate scorer in all subjects and highest aggregate scorer in professional subjects. Mid HTSW Perera and Mid WLE Aravinda won the awards for the Best Sportsman and the Best Marksman respectively.

Acting Sub Lieutenant DMIE Weerarathne was selected as the Best Direct Entry (VNF) officer while Sub Lieutenant HGK Gunarathne was adjudged as the Best Direct Entry (RNF) Officer. The well-executed gymnastic and drill display added colour to the occasion which was followed by a cultural display depictild a mini version of the popular ‘Sagara Taranga’ show. The spectators dispersed after a grand band display.
