Commander of the Navy visits Southern Naval Area

Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake visited the Southern Naval Area on 16th July 2012. On arrival, he was received by Commander Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral Lakshman Illangakoon.

During the visit, the Navy Commander addressed the naval personnel at SLNS Nipuna and declared open the Command Wardroom at SLNS Dakshina. He looked into the welfare facilities being implemented for the naval personnel and gave further instructions for their improvement. He declared open the Fleet Mess and renovated General Mess at SLNS Dakshina and the renovated General Mess at SLNS Nipuna, which have been constructed and renovated under the concept of the Secretary of Defence to improve the facilities of Senior and Junior Sailor Messes in all naval commands. The messes are air-conditioned and have been made more attractive in order to create a comfortable environment for naval personnel to have their meals and spend their leisure time.

The Commander also declared open the Sports Complex and the Indoor Badminton Court at SLNS Nipuna, which have been constructed with modern sports equipment and infrastructure facilities for multi-sport events. The new facilities will contribute to the smooth conduct of all command-level sports competitions and the improvement of sporting talents of naval personnel in the Southern Naval Area. He also declared open the Armory for Merchant Shipping Security, which has been constructed at SLNS Dakshina.
