The timely intervention of the naval personnel averted a major disaster at Kerawalapitiya on the Colombo-Katunayake Highway last night.
During a search operation conducted based on information received, the naval troops were able to uncover 20 kilograms of lethal C 4 Explosives and 23 Electric Detonators buried in sand at Kerawalapitiya adjacent to the Colombo-Katunayake Highway which is under construction.
20 packets of lethal C 4 explosives, each packet containing one kilogram of C 4, were found wrapped in cloth and polythene around 9.15 p.m last night by the naval personnel.
If the lethal explosives were left undetected, they would have caused a massive destruction of gigantic proportion, due to the high sensitivity of the location in which the recovery was made. A number of oil and gas storage facilities as well as thermal power plants are located in the vicinity.
