THE UNFAMILIAR TERMS OF A FAMILIAR SPORT
Most of the Sri Lankans have a remarkable affection for the game of cricket, which rose like a
phoenix from the ashes following the World Cup victory in 1996. As the game evolved over time, it received
a large magnitude of public attention and cricket matches were started to be telecast on television. It is
in this backdrop, the cricket commentators too became key figures and their commentaries allowed avid
Sri Lankan cricket fans to pick a wide variety of cricket terms and expressions to beef up their cricketing
glossary. This article is attempting to unravel some of the unfamiliar terms of a familiar sport, cricket.
